Instant Games are now built into Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger just keeps on adding features. The latest one is called Instant Games, and it's been announced today. It's exactly what it sounds like - you can play some games "instantly" against your friends. Currently there are 17 titles available (seen in the image below), in 30 (unnamed) countries, on the web, as well as for devices running Android 5.0 or later and iOS 8 or later.

Facebook is expecting more games to be available soon from more developers. To play the current selection, just go into a conversation in Messenger (if you have the latest version) and tap on the new game controller icon just below where you type your message. Then choose a game and you can start playing immediately. After you finish a round, the people in that conversation will see your score and will get the opportunity to challenge you back.

Games are also discoverable through the search function in Messenger, as well as in Facebook's own News Feed, where you can play solo or challenge your friends back in Messenger. Games on Facebook Messenger have score-based leaderboards, in-context chat, and group thread conversations. Since the games are written in HTML5, they run inside Messenger, there's no need to download anything else.

Facebook Messenger notifications will show up on Android Auto displays

If you are a frequent user of FacebookMessenger, and you also happen to own a car that can use Android Auto, you will now be able to safely receive and respond to Messenger notifications while driving. Facebook announced that it has updated the Messenger Android app to integrate it with Android Auto.
If you do happen to have Facebook Messenger installed on your Android smartphone, and have it with you while driving down the road on your Android Auto-supported vehicle, the Messenger update will display any new message notifications on the screen. Users can also listen to the actual message itself, read aloud by pressing the speaker icon.
Messenger users then have two options for responding. One is simply to press a button that will send a canned message back to the person, such as, “I’m driving right now; contact me later”.  The other is to speak out the message they want to send through the app, which is then transcribed and sent back to the person on the other end as text.
Do you believe this new Facebook Messenger update will be a useful one for Android Auto users?

According to an update in the FAQ section of the WhatsApp App it has now been extended to June 2017.

WhatsApp support for mobile devices

As announced in our blog, we will soon be ending support for certain devices. On June 30, 2017, we will no longer support the following platforms:

BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 Nokia S40 Nokia Symbian S60 The following platforms will no longer be supported at the beginning of 2017:

Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7 iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android running OS 2.3+, a Windows Phone 8+, or an iPhone running iOS 7+ before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.

Samsung launches Android 7.0 Nougat beta program for S7 and S7 edge

If you have a Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, youmight be able to give your device an Android Nougat refresh before everyone else. Samsung's Galaxy Beta Program isnow available for S7 users, but only in the US, the UK and the company's home country of Korea, though it will soon launch in China, as well.
You'll have to apply for the privilege to be one of the first -- and fast, since it's first-come, first-served -- by making a Samsung account and then downloading the Galaxy Beta Program or the Samsung Members app. Since the Korean conglomerate introduced the program for Android Marshmallow last year, you might already have either app. In case you do get early access to Nougat, you'll obviously be able to preview Samsung's updated user interface and provide feedback on anything you think needs fixing.
Take note that that if you somehow managed to snag a limited edition S7 edge Olympic Games or an S7 edge Injustice Edition, you won't be able to participate in the beta. Further, you're only eligible in the UK if you have an unlocked device. In the US, on the other hand, you'll have to be a Sprint, T-Mobile or a Verizon subscriber. If you can't participate in the beta or end up not getting a slot,Sammobile has some screenshots of Nougat on a Galaxy S7 so you can get an idea of what it would look like on your device.

Amazing Scientists Develop HIV Detecting using USB Stick

May Also like:Google's Pixel Wins a Place in the Sun

A USB stick which can detect HIV levels in less than 30 minutes has been developed by British scientists.
The device, created by scientists at Imperial College London and the privately-held US firm DNA Electronics, uses a drop of blood to detect HIV, then creates an electrical signal that can be read by a computer, laptop or handheld device.
Though the technology is new, it “shows great potential as a route to a point of care diagnostic suitable for use in clinical settings without access to a laboratory infrastructure,” researchers stated.

They also claim the device could be particularly useful in remote settings to help HIV patients manage their treatment more effectively, since current tests to detect virus levels take at least three days and involve sending a blood sample to a laboratory.
“Monitoring viral load is crucial to the success of HIV treatment. At the moment, testing often requires costly and complex equipment that can take a couple of days to produce a result,” said Graham Cooke, who co-led the research from the Imperial’s department of medicine.

“We have taken the job done by this equipment, which is the size of a large photocopier, and shrunk it down to a USB chip.”
The test, which uses a mobile phone chip, requires a drop of blood to be placed onto a spot on the USB stick.
Any HIV in the sample triggers an acidity change, which the chip transforms into an electrical signal. This is sent to the USB stick, which shows the result on a computer or electronic device.

'Crazy' to say Facebook helped Trump win - Zuckerberg

Facing criticism that fake news on Facebook aided the rise of Donald Trump, founder Mark Zuckerberg has strongly defended his network.
Speaking on stage at Techonomy, a technology conference in California, Mr Zuckerberg said Facebook should not be held responsible.
"The idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea," he said.
"If you believe that then I don't think you have internalised the message Trump supporters are trying to send in this election."
Some data has shown that fake stories were being far more widely shared on the platform than follow up stories debunking the claims.

Facing criticism that fake news on Facebook aided the rise of Donald Trump, founder Mark Zuckerberg has strongly defended his network.

For an increasing number of people, particularly Americans, Facebook is becoming the primary source of news coverage.
The site's News Feed is specifically designed to show users content it thinks will be of most interest, creating what some describe as a "filter bubble" that reinforces a person's view without injecting differences in opinion.

'Work to do'

Earlier this year, Facebook was accused of being anti-Trump after it was alleged its human moderators were favouring liberal stories appearing in people's "trending stories" box.
While denying that claim, the site did sack its human team, instead relying solely on an algorithm to determine which stories were shown to be most popular.
As a consequence, stories which were later proved entirely false appeared on the timelines of a large number of users.
When asked about checks and balances needed to keep a company like Facebook in line, Mr Zuckerberg said it was about "listening to what people want".
"My goal, and what I care about, is giving people the power to share so we can make the world more open and connected. That requires building a good version of News Feed. We still have work to do on that. We’re going to keep improving it.
"On the community guidelines, I think as norms change and people want to see more news, I think we'll have to continue to evolve the guidelines to reflect the value that the community holds."
At the same event, Mr Zuckerberg offered an optimistic view of Mr Trump's presidency, saying that his goals of improving global healthcare and connectivity did not necessarily require the co-operation of government.

Gadget Ogling: Mac's Back, Nintendo Returns, and Huawei Goes to the Edge

macbook-pro
Welcome to Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, the column that leads you by the hand through the sprawling labyrinth of gadget announcements to find the hidden treasure.
In our chest of delights this time around are the latest MacBook Pro, Nintendo's new console, and a smartphone from Huawei.
As always, these are not reviews, partly because some of these items are months away from hitting retailers' shelves. The ratings relate only to how much I'd like to try each item.

Apple Crunch

Apple has unveiled a redesigned MacBook Pro, giving the company's core laptop its first full refresh in a few years.
The design has metal on all sides, along with a Force Touch trackpad double the size of previous versions.
There's a customizable OLED touch strip above the keyboard that responds to gestures and taps -- a demo indicated one might use it for fast access to various emoji or for secondary controls within an app. It essentially replaces function keys, but with far more purpose and control.
To the side of the Touch Bar is the second-generation Touch ID module for fingerprint authentication.
Naturally, it's the thinnest, lightest MacBook Pro ever, because Apple and hyperbole are tighter than Velcro and fabric. The display is 67 percent brighter and displays 25 percent more colors, though apparently somehow eats less power than before. The battery apparently lasts up to 10 hours on a single charge.
For connectivity, there are four Thunderbolt USB Type-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack, which Apple clearly displayed great courage to include. However, there are no HDMI, USB or Thunderbolt ports, or any memory card slots. The Type-C ports are all you get -- even if, thankfully, there are three more than in the previous MacBook.
I'm sure it's shinier and prettier and smarter and thinner and faster than ever, and that's well and good. Aside from the compelling Touch Bar, though, there's not a lot to get truly thrilled about.

Regular readers will note I am a lifelong lover of games, and particularly Nintendo. I remember how excited I was as a 6-year-old to unwrap my Super Nintendo on Christmas morning. I've devoted many, many hours to Super Mario Worldand my favorite game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in the quarter century since.
The Wii U didn't much excite me, except for the tremendous Super Mario Maker. However, the latest Nintendo offering, Nintendo Switch, offers a look at a new future for console gaming.
Switch is a hybrid system that, when nestled into its dock, connects to a television. So far, so traditional. However, when you lift Switch out of said dock, it instantly transforms into a portable gaming system with a high-definition display.
The device has two detachable Joy-Con controllers, with one connected to each side. These can stay separate, connect with an accessory to become a more traditional controller, or be used as individual controllers for some multiplayer games. Switch also will support a standalone pro controller.
Switch uses GameCard cartridges instead of discs, which suggests the system may not be backward-compatible with Wii or Wii U games. Gamers can connect multiple Switch systems for local multiplayer play. It seems like Switch is designed to replace both the Wii U and the 3DS, which is curious, since Nintendo's handheld systems have performed well for some time.
Even with such scant details (the Switch doesn't go on sale until March), Switch is an utterly compelling console. It looks like it's going to hit the right balance between casual and more passionate gamers that the Wii and Wii U consoles never were able to find. Plus, there's that wonderful IP in MarioZelda, and so many other titles.
I truly can't wait to get my hands on one, and then proceed to lose easily in a game of Mario Kart.
Rating: 5 out of 5 1-Ups

Nothing but Screen

I've made no bones about being someone who's probably an iOS lifer at this point, but if anything were to push me into switching smartphone teams, it'd be something like the Mi Mix Androidphablet.
It seems a little larger than I'd like, with a 6.4-inch screen, but that's almost entirely screen real estate -- the display takes up 91.3 percent of the body. It looks gorgeous, almost like the pure glass phone of Jony Ive's dreams. It's not quite that, though, as the rear and side buttons are made of ceramic.
Ultrasound takes the place of a proximity sensor, which is neat, and the Mi Mix houses 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and uses the same Snapdragon processor as Google Pixel. There's a rear 16-megapixel camera -- though weirdly, the front-facing camera is at the bottom of the phone to account for all of that screen space.
Again, the design is spectacular. It's probably the best-looking smartphone I've seen since the iPhone 6.
It's a shame that you'll likely need to pay a premium to import one from China, when Xiaomireally could have something on its hands were it to take this globally. I'd absolutely be tempted to get it, even if I am bound to my contract for another year.
